Brief background and purpose of the call:

The Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) Grants and Research Capacity Building Committee is pleased to announce the FIFTH round of the Seed Grants programme, 2023. The goal of the programme is to enhance the School’s research capacity in important yet neglected and emerging areas of public health in Uganda and the region, as well as equip junior faculty, Research Associates and Fellows with skills to build independent research careers. This year, the topics of specific interest to the programme include: Climate Change and Health, Global Health Security, Antimicrobial Resistance, One Health, Sustainable Health, Urban Health, Non Communicable Diseases, Neglected Tropical Diseases, and Disaster Management. Proposals for analysis of existing datasets are also encouraged.

Target group and eligibility: To be eligible for funding, applicants must be junior faculty, Research Associates or Research Fellows at MakSPH at the time of application submission. Applicants are encouraged to be part of a research group. To be considered for funding:

a) junior faculty should be Makerere University appointed staff at the rank of Assistant Lecturer or Lecturer, not more than 10 years from the time the applicant completed their PhD (if applicable) and should not have previously received more than $100,000 in a single grant award;

b) Research Associates or Fellows should be actively involved in teaching and other MakSPH academic activities. An applicant can only be considered for one award per year. Priority will be given to junior faculty.

Funding restrictions and terms of grant: A maximum of $10,000 will be awarded to each successful proposal for a maximum of one year. This funding is intended to support the collection, analysis and dissemination of research. Direct salaries / personnel allowances, equipment costs (e.g. laptops) and indirect costs will not be funded. Please note that an applicant should not have outstanding accountabilities with MakSPH.

Submission guidelines and deadline: Applications must be submitted via email at researchcb@musph.ac.ug. The proposal template is available here. Completed applications must be submitted by 5:00pm on 30th June 2023 East Africa Standard Time.

Application requirements: Only proposals adhering to the required format will be reviewed. All sections of the proposal are limited to 8.5”x11” pages with one-inch margins on all sides, double spaced, in Times New Roman, and 12-point font. The application must be submitted as a single PDF and should not exceed 12 pages. Applicants should state on the cover page, the topic of specific interest (as listed above) under which their proposal is being submitted.

Award decisions: The Grants Administration Secretariat will conduct an initial review of all submitted proposals to ensure they meet the requirements outlined above. Proposals that meet the requirements will then be reviewed by the Grants and Research Capacity Building Committee. This committee will make the final funding decisions, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by 31st August 2023.
