Makerere University in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is implementing a project entitled “Ensuring access to health care and medicines during COVID-19: critical challenges and feasible policy options for the medicines retail sector”. This project builds on a decade of research in the Ugandan Medicine Retail Sector (MRS), aims to understand and mitigate the vulnerability of supply and access to medicines within the Uganda health system (WHO Roadmap priorities 9.9, 9.11). Project activities will document how COVID-19 and the national response to the pandemic have shaped the ability of the MRS to deliver antibiotics, malaria medicines, and contraceptives; identify feasibly, costed policy actions to mitigate any negative impact of COVID-19 on access to medicines; and identify ways that the MRS can play an active role in response to ongoing and future pandemics.

Makerere University School of Public Health project team is looking for talented and creative individuals for the role of a field supervisor. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and innovative team player. These staff will have the responsibility of participating in organizing, implementing project activities, and reporting to the Principal Investigator and to ensure that research project objectives and activities are successfully executed in a timely manner.  He or she should be interested in pursuing further post-graduate studies in the short to medium term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in day-to-day project activities under direct supervision of the PI as required during implementation of study activities
  • Ensure timely implementation and completion of all the listed deliverables and milestones
  • Participate in the preparation and finalization of all copies and versions of all reports
  • Be responsible for carrying out the research activities according to the set timelines
  • Contribute to writing up findings that will be disseminated through peer reviewed journals
  • Participate in finalizing the development of materials and methods for data collection and  analysis
  • Participate and coordinate the process of data collection (desk reviews and in-depth interviews) and data analysis
  • Maintain accurate records of collected data and concrete field notes
  • Conduct of ethnographic observations
  • Ensure ethical conduct of research including confidentiality and protection of human subjects
  • Participate in preparing materials for submission ethical approval 
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Humanities, Arts, Sociology, Gender studies and relevant health related disciplines (Attachment as one document)

Certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and additional human subjects research training (Attachment)

Training on project management and/or monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage (Attachment).

Essential requirement –

Previous experience in data collection, analysis and writing up of quantitative and qualitative findings. (In specific terms, describe previous work)

At least 3 years of relevant experience in a research environment including research in the medicine retail sector. (Provide evidence of work with the medicine retail sector in rural areas)

Advanced ability to speak, read, and write Luganda and English and translate between the two languages. (describe previous work where you had to translate)

Experience, skills and other requirements (20 to 30 word explanation to illustrate each point)

  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and observe deadlines
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow current COVID19 guidelines
  • Ability to conduct activities via virtual means such as phones, zoom and related platforms.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
