For over 70 years, the Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) has built enduring partnerships that shape public health policy, strengthen health systems, and improve lives across Uganda, Africa, and the world.

A Legacy of Collaboration and Impact

Period	Parnership milestones
1950s – 1970s	The School’s earliest collaborations established the DNA of community-based public health. With WHO and the Rockefeller Foundation, MakSPH (then part of the Faculty of Medicine) developed Kasangati Health Centre as a teaching and research site — a pioneering model of integrated field training that informed WHO’s later Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy . These partnerships trained Uganda’s first generation of health inspectors and public-health officers and created enduring links between academia and service delivery.
1980s – 1990s	Global partnerships transformed MakSPH into a research powerhouse. Working with Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, and the U.S. CDC, MakSPH co-founded the Rakai Health Sciences Program, a cornerstone in global HIV prevention and community-based epidemiology . Meanwhile, partnerships with UNICEF and USAID strengthened child-health programs, nutrition research, and immunization coverage. These alliances laid the groundwork for Uganda’s evidence-driven health policy era.
2000s	With support from NORAD and USAID, MakSPH expanded into regional leadership. The School joined AFREhealth, NORHED, and the One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) network, integrating human, animal, and environmental health into training and research . Collaborations with University of Bergen, University of Nairobi, and Muhimbili University established the Iganga–Mayuge Health and Demographic Surveillance Site, now a pillar of longitudinal community studies. Through these networks, MakSPH evolved into a continental collaborator and training hub.
2010s	The past decade brought partnerships that blended data science, innovation, and implementation. MakSPH hosted three flagship collaborations: Resilient Africa Network (RAN) – a USAID-supported consortium strengthening resilience across 20 African universities. Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA) – a WHO-supported regional centre guiding tobacco-control policy in over 10 countries. Monitoring & Evaluation Technical Support (METS) – a CDC/PEPFAR program digitizing Uganda’s HIV/TB data systems . Each initiative demonstrates how partnerships drive systems change — from field data to policy dashboards.
2020s	Recent partnerships have reinforced MakSPH’s role in regional health security. Through PRESIDE, Africa CDC, WHO, and the Global Fund, the School has led pandemic-preparedness assessments, digital-surveillance research, and training for emergency-response leadership . Collaborations under PERSUADE I & II and SPEED for UHC have strengthened analytical capacity and evidence use across Africa. Today, global and national partners are investing jointly in the new MakSPH Building — a living symbol of shared commitment to the future of public-health excellence.
