Data Driving Family Planning Progress in Uganda

Through the Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) project, led by Associate Professor Frederick Makumbi, Makerere University School of Public Health is generating critical data that guides Uganda’s family planning policies. PMA’s surveys provide timely insights on contraceptive use, unmet need, and service access, evidence that has shaped national strategies like the Family Planning Costed Implementation Plan (2020–2025). Findings show rising modern contraceptive use and narrowing regional disparities, particularly for rural women and adolescents. PMA’s work continues to inform programs that expand access, reduce unintended pregnancies, and improve the health and wellbeing of families across Uganda.
