Studies in behavioural safety have shown that unsafe work behaviour increases the risk of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs) in workplaces. Although participatory tool box talks have been found to be efficacious for behaviour change in occupational injury prevention, there’s no published evidence of their application and effectiveness for WRMSD prevention in Uganda's largest Industrial and Business Park. This research intends to provide baseline data on WRMSDs and the unsafe behaviour influencing them and then determine the effectiveness of participatory tool box talks on both variables.

Description

Hand hygiene (HH) compliance is low among health care workers (HCWs) in Uganda. Recent studies have shown a great improvement in hand hygiene adherence among healthcare workers when patients are involved. The patients can remind the health workers to practice hand hygiene in a non-confidential manner. This ultimately improves their relationship. In this study, I will determine the level of hand hygiene knowledge and practices among patients and HCWs, explore the barriers and facilitators to involving patients in promoting HH among HCWs, also explore the perceptions of HCWs regarding involving patients and finally design an intervention aimed at increasing HH compliance among HCWs using patients as agents of change.

This PhD research aims to enhance coordination, policy implementation, funding sustainability, awareness, and stigma reduction to improve TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes. The study will identify facilitators and barriers to successful implementation, inform policy recommendations, and contribute to evidence-based policy reforms to strengthen integrated TB prevention and control strategies. The findings will support efforts to eradicate the TB epidemic by 2030, aligning with national and global objectives.

Walking and cycling can reduce physical inactivity, which is responsible for approximately 3.2 million global deaths annually, with 2.6 million in low- and middle-income countries. Providing safe non-motorised transport (NMT) infrastructure and supportive policies is crucial to promote transport-related physical activity. Kampala Capital City Authority constructed the NMT pilot corridor to stimulate and improve active mobility. My research study will evaluate the implementation and outcomes of the NMT corridor.

The PhD project will determine the resilience of Uganda’s health system to the effects of adverse weather events to facilitate the design of a resilience framework and interventions that address health system challenges. It is a Health systems study that will specifically focus on 1) determine temporal relationships between rainfall patterns and cholera epidemics in greater Hoima and Kasese Districts; 2) Determining the underlying drivers of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of health systems to the effects of adverse weather events in the greater Hoima and Kasese Uganda; 3) Determine the level of community resilience to disease outbreaks in the greater Hoima and Kasese Districts 4) Design intervention (operational) pathways/models for strengthening the resilience of the health system in the event of adverse weather events in Uganda.

Findings will provide insights into barriers, facilitators, and strategies to enhance PrEP uptake, adherence, and continuity in this vulnerable population
