The panelists will discuss the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on health, with a specific focus on extreme weather events such as flooding and its implications for human health. Together, we aim to deepen our understanding of these pressing issues and identify actionable steps towards sustainable health solutions.

Panelists

  1. Dr Johanna Sörensen, Division of Water Resources Engineering, LTH, Sweden
Dr. Johanna Sörensen studies urban hydrological processes, especially during extreme rain, i.e., how torrential rain affects the stormwater network and how better stormwater management can reduce the risk of flooding. In the seminar she will discuss and give examples on how urban planning need to shift towards a focus on more blue-green solutions.

  2. Dr. Sara Gabrielsson, LUCSUS, Centre for Sustainability studies, Lund University.
Dr. Sara Gabrielsson's research focuses on the importance of merging social science research and practical applications to enhance the delivery and quality of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services throughout Africa. During this seminar, her main emphasis will be on the intersection of climate change, health, and WASH in the context of extreme weather events.

  3. Dr. Mugume Isaac Amooti is an esteemed meteorologist and seasoned researcher, currently the Director of Weather Forecasting Services at the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA). Previously a Meteorology Lecturer at Makerere University, he earned a PhD in Meteorology, specializing in cutting-edge Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). Dr. Mugume actively applies Numerical Modelling to address agricultural, water resource, and weather-related hazard challenges. He's a pioneer in advanced modeling tools like the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, contributing to Uganda's weather resilience and climate adaptation.

  4. Dr. Tamer Samah Rabie is a Lead Health Specialist at the World Bank's Health, Nutrition, and Population Global Practice. With over two decades of experience in clinical medicine, public health, and health systems, Tamer holds a master’s in public health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Since 2005, he has led programs in over 25 countries, spanning Europe, Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia, and the Middle East and North Africa. Tamer initiated the global Health-Climate and Environment Program (H-CEP) in 2019 to integrate environmental health and climate-smart healthcare into World Bank operations. He supports diverse projects, including Universal Health Coverage, environmental health initiatives, and addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
