Orientation of the First Year Students 2019/20 at MakSPH

At the beginning of each academic year, Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) organizes a students’ orientation meeting which presents an opportunity to the administration to interact with new students.

Speaking at the orientation, the Academic Registrar Ms. Khamili Gladys, congratulated the students upon joining Uganda’s best university.

In a special way, she welcomed the international students to MakSPH, one of the largest public health Schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. She also advised them to attend lectures and also register in time to avoid last minute stress. She emphasized the importance of discussion groups and hard work if they are to achieve greatly. “Think critically and be self-directed learners,” she implored them.

While gracing the event, the Dean of MakSPH, Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze advised the students to be passionate about what they do. She encouraged them to invest time in their studies and to reach out to her in the event of any challenges.

In his address, The Deputy Dean, Prof. Makumbi emphasized the element of quality research, treasuring time as adults and advised them to work hard in their studies as they embark on their new career journey. "If you came because you want a degree, you may get it but you should have purpose driven life as well," he compelled them.

The students were also urged to be good time managers, to concentrate on their studies and to always ensure they are safe.

The students were also addressed by the heads of the various departments in the School, Administrators and student leaders who collectively advised the new students to participate in School activities and health campaigns. The orientation preparations were spearheaded by Doreen Tuhebwe and Steven Sendagire, the MPH Programme coordinators.

The students were from the courses that are currently offered at the School. These include:

  • Master’s in Public Health (Distance Education)
  • Master’s in Public Health (Full time)
  • Masters in Health Services Research
  • Masters in Health Nutrition
  • Masters in Disaster Management
  • Masters of Health Informatics
  • Masters in Biostatistics
  • Master in Public Health (Monitoring and Evaluation)
  • Bachelor of Environmental Health Sciences
  • Certificate of Health Services Management
