The Master of Public Health Nutrition program at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) was established in 2008 in response to Uganda’s critical shortage of trained nutrition professionals. Despite persistent malnutrition challenges and various interventions, limited success was achieved partly due to inadequate human resource capacity in nutrition. The World Bank highlighted the urgent need for trained nutrition workers, noting that neighboring countries had already adopted strategies to ensure at least one nutritionist per region or district. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other partners, MakSPH developed the program to address this gap. Since its inception, it has trained and graduated over 80 specialists who now provide leadership in nutrition across sectors and international organizations, with ongoing improvements to the curriculum informed by more than a decade of experience.
