Who we are

Windle International Uganda (WIU) is an International Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to providing inclusive, equitable, and quality education for refugees and host communities in 12 refugee settlements (Kiryandongo, Adjumani, Palabek, Palorinya, Rhino Camp, Imvepi, Bidibidi, Kyangwali, Nakivale, Oruchinga, Kyaka II and Rwamwanja) across Uganda, including Kampala. WIU works in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, along other education and development actors, to address the urgent education needs of refugees in Uganda.
WIU believes that; Education Transforms Society and aims to facilitate access to quality education and skills training for refugees and individuals in need of humanitarian assistance. By doing so, we strive to reduce inequality and poverty among refugees, people affected by conflict, and host communities.
We empower refugees and people affected by conflict and marginalisation to achieve their academic potential and contribute to sustainable development, by acting as a lead provider of quality education and training. From managing primary and secondary schools to providing higher education scholarships and offering vocational training, we help people to succeed at every educational level.
WIU has been a leader in providing access to all levels of education and vocational training for conflict-affected and marginalised Africans since 1996. We have vast experience in delivering impactful programmes, including administering schools at pre-primary, primary and secondary level on behalf of UNHCR.
From building classrooms, latrines and teacher accommodation, to hiring teachers and providing all the materials children need to learn, we manage every aspect of running schools in 12 refugee settlements in Uganda. We also run early childhood development centres for children aged 3-5 years, provide vocational training, manage technology access centres for communities, and manage a large number of scholarship programmes.
Our education interventions help students to think creatively about development challenges, and discover ways to solve them.
Over the last 28 years, we have made great strides in delivering education programmes for refugees in the districts of; Yumbe, Koboko, Adjumani, Moyo, Obongi, Arua, Madi-Okollo, Terego, Kiryandongo, Kikuube, Kyegwegwa, Kamwenge, Isingiro, Lamwo and in Kampala where the head office is located.
