Call for Applications for the 2025 TRIAD Unit Small Grants Program

Background

The Makerere University School of Public Health Trauma, Injury, and Disability Prevention (MakSPH-TRIAD) Unit is pleased to announce the first round of the Small Grants Program, 2025. The goal of the program is to enhance the TRIAD Unit’s research output and broaden the base in injury research. The program will contribute to the reduction of the injury burden in Uganda by providing more context-specific evidence on injury prevention and strengthening research capacity on injuries and their medical, social, and economic consequences across the lifespan of individuals and communities in Uganda. This call is looking for applications from students who are registered for a postgraduate program (master’s) at Makerere University School of Public Health. The thematic areas are road safety, drowning prevention, child injuries and burns, occupational health and safety, disability and rehabilitation, injuries from animal attacks, poisoning, suffocation, emergency medical services, and violence.

Eligibility:

  1. Should be enrolled in any of the following programs: Master of Biostatistics, Master in Health Informatics (MHI), Master of Public Health Full-Time (MPH-FT) program, Master of Public Health Disaster Management (MDM), Master of Health Services Research (MHSR), Master of Public Health Nutrition (MPHN), Master of Public Health Monitoring and Evaluation (MPHME), Master of Environmental and Occupational Health (MEOH).
  2. Should have a researchable proposal on injuries and related outcomes and should have completed the 1st year of graduate training.
  3. Willingness to undertake and complete Injury Elective course(s) mandated by the TRIAD unit.
  4. Demonstrate interest in Trauma, Injury and Disability Prevention research and commitment to develop a productive career in Injury Research
  5. Commitment to publish research conducted under this training in open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Awards: A total of four (4) awards are anticipated for this funding cycle.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. Demonstrated interest in and capacity for injury and disability prevention research
  2. Leadership potential
  3. Academic background (prior degrees, with a CGPA of at least 3.6 in the first year of the master’s program, academic year 2024/2025)

Funding restrictions and Terms of the grant: A maximum of USD 2,500 (US $2,500) will be awarded to each successful applicant for a maximum of one year. Please note that this is partial funding intended to support data collection, analysis, and dissemination of research. Direct salaries or personnel allowances, equipment costs (e.g. Laptops) and indirect costs will not be funded. Applicants seeking additional funding are at an added advantage. An applicant should not have outstanding accountabilities with MakSPH. Applicants cannot submit more than one proposal for application.

Applications should consist of a cover letter (1 page only), a signed up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV) (not more than 3 pages), a compelling personal statement (Maximum 1 page), a research concept (Maximum 5 pages), and two letters of recommendation in support of the application. The application must be submitted as a single PDF and cannot exceed 12 pages. Applicants should state on the cover page the topic of specific interest under which their proposal is being submitted. Award decisions: The TRIAD Unit will conduct an initial review of all completed proposals to ensure they meet the submission requirements outlined above. Proposals that meet the requirements will then be further reviewed for decision-making. The review committee will make the final funding decisions, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by August 15, 2025.
