Call for Applications: MakSPH TRIAD Small Grants 2025

Background

The Trauma, Injury, and Disability Prevention (TRIAD) Unit at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is pleased to announce the inaugural round of the TRIAD Small Grants Program for 2025. This program aims to strengthen the Unit’s research capacity and broaden the base of injury-related research. Through this initiative, the TRIAD Unit seeks to contribute to reducing Uganda’s injury burden by supporting research on the medical, social, and economic consequences of injuries across the lifespan.

The call targets postgraduate students (Master’s level) enrolled at MakSPH. Priority thematic areas include:

  • Road safety
  • Drowning prevention
  • Child injuries and burns
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Disability and rehabilitation
  • Injuries from animal attacks
  • Poisoning
  • Suffocation
  • Emergency medical services
  • Violence

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in one of the following MakSPH programs: Master of Biostatistics (MBIO), Master of Health Informatics (MHI), Master of Public Health (MPH – Full-Time), Master of Public Health Disaster Management (MDM), Master of Health Services Research (MHSR), Master of Public Health Nutrition (MPHN), Master of Public Health Monitoring and Evaluation (MPHME), or Master of Environmental and Occupational Health (MEOH).
  • Have completed the first year of their Master’s program with a strong concept focused on injury research.
  • Be willing to participate in and complete all required TRIAD Unit training activities.
  • Demonstrate a clear interest in trauma, injury, and disability prevention research, with a commitment to building a career in injury research.
  • Commit to publishing the research conducted under this grant in open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Awards

Up to four (4) grants will be awarded in this funding cycle.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated interest and capacity in injury and disability prevention research
  • Leadership potential
  • Strong academic performance (minimum CGPA of 4.0 in Year 1 of the 2024/2025 academic year)

Funding Terms and Restrictions

Each selected applicant will receive a grant of up to USD 2,500 to support research activities over a maximum period of one year. The grant is intended to partially cover costs related to data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
Note:

  • Personnel salaries, equipment purchases (e.g., laptops), and indirect costs are not covered.
  • Applicants with access to additional funding sources are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants with outstanding accountabilities at MakSPH will not be considered.
  • Only one proposal per applicant is allowed.

Application Procedure

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF file (maximum 12 pages) via email to triadrecruitment@musph.ac.ug, with a copy to foporia@musph.ac.ug. The application must include:

  • A one-page cover letter
  • An up-to-date and signed CV (maximum 3 pages)
  • A personal statement (maximum 1 page)
  • A research concept note (maximum 5 pages)
  • Two letters of recommendation

The cover page should clearly indicate the specific thematic area under which the proposal is being submitted.
Deadline: Applications must be submitted by 5:00 PM EAT on 11th July 2025.

Award Decisions

All complete proposals will undergo an initial screening to ensure they meet the submission criteria. Eligible applications will then be reviewed by an independent review committee. Final funding decisions will be communicated to applicants by 15th August 2025.
