Makerere University in collaboration with the Uganda Heart Institute, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Children's National Hospital, DC received funding from the National Institutes of Health’s Fogarty international Centre to implement the Impact Training Program. The goal of the program is to equip and nurture emerging research leaders and professional scholars in Uganda to generate high-quality contemporary evidence on rheumatic heart disease (RHD) across the lifespan and to create an enduring research training center on the African continent that will rapidly advance progress towards the elimination of the disease in a generation.  The Impact Program is soliciting for applications from masters students for 1-year research support tenable at Makerere University and career development fellowships. 

Masters Fellowships

a.     Should be enrolled in any of the following programs: Masters’ degree in Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Nursing, Public Health, Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Social Sciences, Gender Studies or Biomedical/Health related field.

b.     Should have a good concept on RHD research and should have completed the 1st or 2nd year of graduate training.

c.     Willingness to undertake and complete all training mandated by the Impact program.

d.     Demonstrate interest in RHD research and commitment to develop a productive career in cardiovascular medicine/ research.  

e.     Willingness to undertake and complete all training as mandated by the Impact program.

f.      Commitment to publish research conducted under this training in open access peer reviewed journals. 

Career Development Award (Non-Degree training) Fellowships

a.     Must be a junior or mid-level faculty at Makerere University, Uganda Heart Institute or affiliated institutions.

b.     Prior PhD / master’s degree /or fellowship in medicine, social sciences, gender studies or biomedical/health related field. 

c.     Good experience in health/biomedical research and exposure to scientific writing and research publication

d.     Good understanding of  RHD and related complications.

e.     Willingness to undertake and complete all training mandated by the Impact program so as to conduct a mentored research project publishable in an open access peer reviewed journal.

f.      Commitment to publish research conducted under this training in open access peer reviewed journals. 

g.     Provide evidence of experience in research and or authorship in the RHD field.

h.     Able to articulate a clear research RHD problem.

i.       Demonstrate interest in RHD research and commitment to develop a productive career in cardiovascular medicine/ research..

Criteria for Selection

1.     Demonstrated interest in research training and conducting research with a focus on RHD. 

2.     Having a plan for career development,

3.     Capacity towards attaining research leadership and international recognition in RHD/CVD medicine.

4.     Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Applications must be emailed as a single PDF document to the Impact Program Coordinator to <makimpact22@gmail.com> and should consist of a cover letter (1 page only), a resume (not more than 3 pages), a personal statement (Maximum 1 page), a research concept (Maximum 2 pages) and two letters of recommendation (sent separately by the referees to <makimpact22@gmail.com>). Successful candidates must complete training in responsible conduct of research (RCR), protection of human research participants (PHRP) and good clinical practice (GCP) before they conduct research involving human research subjects.
