DIGITAL MOBILE TECHNOLOGIES TO STUDY TUBERCULOSIS: A MULTI-DISCPLINARY PROGRAM

REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
The University of Georgia, College Public Health and the Global Health Institute in Athens, Georgia, United States in conjunction with Makerere University School of Public Health is soliciting applications for one training position that will lead to a PhD degree in Epidemiology with a concentration in either Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) or Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Most of the training will be undertaken at the University of Georgia with a two-year residency requirement. The training will focus on the use of mobile digital technologies in the treatment, prevention, and transmission of tuberculosis in Africa. Upon completing the degree, the trainee will be expected to transfer knowledge and skills to advance the research agenda on tuberculosis in Uganda and more broadly in Africa. The trainee will be expected to return to Uganda and develop his or her own independent or collaborative research program within an academic or research institution. The degree program takes 4 to 5 years to complete. The training program will provide funding for tuition, research, stipend, and travel to and from the United States.
Prerequisites: Ugandans currently resident in country who have completed a Master degree in the past 3 years in a relevant field such as Geography, GIS, Computer Science, Public Health (Epidemiology or Biostatistics focus), Health Informatics, Mathematics, or similar field of study. Applicants who are based at an academic or research institution in Uganda are preferred. Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
Criteria for Selection:
- Knowledge of intermediate level Epidemiology
- Demonstrated interest in tuberculosis or TB/HIV research
- Basic knowledge about GIS or computer science is preferred but not required
- Demonstrated potential to handle rigorous, quantitative, academic requirements of the graduate degree program
- Demonstrated potential to enhance research and public health activities with the Ministry of Health, Makerere University or other local Universities, local health research institutions or programs in Uganda.
