Makerere University College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health (MakSPH), and the Ministry of Health, with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, plan to conduct a climate change health vulnerability and adaptation assessment (VAA) to facilitate the sound management of climate Change-related health risks in Uganda. Evidence generated by the VAA will be used to inform the development of a Health National Adaptation Plan for Uganda. The assessment will be conducted in healthcare facilities in 43 districts in the 15 regions of Uganda i.e. Acholi, Ankole, Bugisu, Bukedi, Bunyoro, and Busoga. Kampala, Karamoja, Kigezi, Lango, North central, South central, Teso, Tooro, and West Nile. It is based on this background that, MakSPH seeks to recruit responsible, qualified, and competent individuals who can work with minimum supervision to join the core research team. Applicants are therefore invited to fill the following positions:

Regional supervisors (5)

Reports to: Study Coordinator

  • Obtain administrative clearance from the selected district health offices
  • Guide the team leaders in the sampling of study healthcare facilities and community health workers
  • Supervise all the team leaders in the assigned districts
  • Lead the mobilization of all key informants in the study district
  • With the help of team leaders, spearhead the development of field reports, detailing the different activities, challenges faced, and corrective action
  • Review all the accountabilities of the assigned study teams and write a brief financial report outlining how the funds are spent

Requirements

  • Possess a minimum of a Master’s degree in a health-related discipline such as Public Health, Public Health Disaster Management, Environmental and Occupational Health, Medicine, Nursing, OR Social sciences, Statistics and Environmental studies
  • Evidence of being a regional supervisor on at least 2 research projects
  • Must have a certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Research
  • Proven research experience in public health research is mandatory
  • Should have at least three years of experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative health research
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the local languages spoken in any of these regions (Acholi, Ankole, Bugisu, Bukedi, Bunyoro, Busoga. Kampala, Karamoja, Kigezi, Lango, Northcentral, South Central, Teso, Tooro, and West Nile, (both spoken and written)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience in using mobile data collection applications (ODK, Kobo Collect, or Survey Monkey)
  • Must have an Android phone of version 10 and above and should be willing to use it for data collection
  • Must be willing to work beyond official working hours in the field

Team leaders (5)

Report to: Regional supervisors

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Assign selected study healthcare facilities to the research assistants
  • Lead the mobilisation of participants (village health teams and members of the health unit management committees) for focus group discussions
  • Answer questions that the area authorities may ask before, during, or after the course of data collection
  • Ensure that the research assistants comply with the set data collection and ethics guidelines at all times
  • Develop a daily work breakdown schedule for the research assistants
  • Lead data collection and participate in data management processes including validation to ensure quality data collection
  • Provide the regional supervisors with daily updates on the work done by his/her team. This includes progress on the work done, any challenges experienced, and suggestions (if needed) in field data collection schedules, among other aspects
  • Review team expenditures and provide a brief financial narrative to the regional supervisors.
  • Ensure that all vehicle log forms are clearly filled by the drivers
  • Ensure all the research assistants register their attendance on a daily basis
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the study coordinator

Requirements

  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline such as Environmental Health, Nursing and Public Health OR Social sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Statistics. Possession of a Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Statistics will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of being a team leader on at least 2 research projects
  • Must have a certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Research
  • Proven experience working in Healthcare facilities is mandatory
  • Should have at least three years’ experience in collecting quantitative and qualitative health research
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the local languages spoken in the study regions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience in using mobile data collection applications (ODK, Kobo Collect or Survey Monkey)
  • Must have an Android phone of version 10 and above and should be willing to use it for data collection
  • Must be willing to work beyond official working hours in the field

Quality Control Officers (5)

Report to: Co-Principal Investigator

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the training of research assistants on quality control and assurance
  • Ensure adherence to study ethics including the consenting process
  • Conduct quality control and assurance of the data collection process during the survey
  • Ensure that all selected facilities have been visited by the RAs and all eligible respondents have been interviewed by the research assistants
  • Carry out spot data quality checks/ assessments in the assigned regions
  • Make compliance reports to the study coordination team
  • Provide the Co-Principal Investigator with daily updates on the work done
  • Participate in the daily debriefing meetings to troubleshoot any issues arising from the field
  • Any other duties assigned by the Study Coordinator or co-principal investigator

Requirements

  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline such as Environmental Health, Nursing and Public Health OR Social sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Statistics. Possession of a Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Statistics will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of being a team leader on at least 2 research projects
  • Must have a certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Research
  • Proven research experience in healthcare settings is mandatory
  • Should have at least three years of experience in quality assurance and control in research
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Prior experience in using mobile data collection applications (ODK, Kobo Collect, or Survey Monkey)
  • Must have an Android phone of version 10 and above and should be willing to use it for data collection
  • Must be willing to work beyond official working hours in the field

Research Assistants (25)

Report to: Team leader

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Carry out data collection in accordance with the study protocol
  • Answer questions that the respondents may ask during the course of data collection
  • Ensure prompt submission of data to the server
  • Participate in data validation to ensure that quality data is collected
  • Transcribe qualitative research interviews and participate in qualitative data analysis where applicable
  • Provide daily updates on fieldwork including interviews completed and any other important information on field data collection
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Team Leader

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences such as Environmental Health, Public Health, and Nursing, OR Humanities or Social sciences, Quantitative Economics
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the local languages in the regions of Acholi, Ankole, Bugisu, Bukedi, Bunyoro, and Busoga. Kampala, Karamoja, Kigezi, Lango, North Central, South Central, Teso, Tooro, and West Nile, (both spoken and written)
  • Must have a certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Research
  • Previous experience in working in healthcare facilities is desirable
  • Experience in both qualitative and quantitative data collection is mandatory
  • Prior experience in using mobile data collection applications (ODK, Kobo Collect, or Survey Monkey)
  • Prior experience in collecting qualitative and quantitative data
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills and ability to follow study-specific procedures and guidelines reliably
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and observe deadlines

Terms of service: This is a short-term position which will not exceed four weeks
