David Guwatudde (BStat, MSc, PhD) is a Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health, Makerere University, in Kampala, Uganda. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in leading training efforts at Makerere University and in research related to the epidemiology of high-burden diseases in Uganda and within the sub-Saharan African (SSA) region, especially on non-communicable diseases. In the area of training, Prof. Guwatudde has long experience and has mentored several students and trainees at Makerere University and beyond, many of whom have developed to become senior professionals with successful careers around the globe. In terms of academic management and leadership experience, beyond his primary teaching responsibilities, Prof. Guwatudde has previously coordinated the Master of Public Health Distance Education program and the Master of Biostatistics program at the School and chaired the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (EPI-BIO) between 2005 and 2009.
In the area of research, his work has largely focused on characterising the epidemiology of high-burden diseases in Uganda and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions for the control of these diseases. He has implemented epidemiologic studies in non-communicable diseases (diabetes and hypertension), tuberculosis (TB), and nutritional morbidities in HIV. He is currently the Uganda site Principal Investigator (PI) on two multi-country research projects: i) the “Nutrition-related Non-communicable Diseases in Adolescence and Youth: Interventions and Policies to Boost Nutrition Fluency and Diet Quality in Africa (ARISE-NUTRINT)”, with participation of six SSA countries, four European countries, and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in the USA; ii) the “Research network for design and evaluation of adolescent health interventions and policies in Sub-Saharan Africa (DASH)” with participation of six SSA countries, three institutions in Germany, and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in the USA.
Previously, Prof. Guwatudde has been the country PI on a multi-country effectiveness randomised trial that evaluated the added benefit of specified community interventions on health facility interventions, for prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. In this study, they designed and tested innovative context-relevant interventions for integration and improvement of prevention and care for type 2 diabetes at primary health care levels. Also, working closely with the Department of Non-Communicable Diseases at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, he has been a Co-Principal Investigator on two countrywide NCD Risk Factor surveys in 2014 and in 2023, on which he led their field implementation. The national surveys are meant to provide benchmark data on the prevalence of risk factors for NCDs in Uganda, to monitor the burden of trends, and inform the formulation and evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions for NCDs in the country.
Prof. Guwatudde is widely published with over 145 publications in international peer-reviewed journals. You can find a complete list of his published work in his PUBMED bibliography here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/david.guwatudde.1/bibliography/public/
