Dr. Fredrick Edward Makumbi is currently an associate professor in the department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics-School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University-Kampala. He graduated with a Bachelor of Statistics (Bstat, Hons) at Makerere University Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (ISAE) in 1993, and a MHS (2000) and PhD (2004) degrees with majors in epidemiology and population studies from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. In 2000 he was awarded The Edward J. Dehne Award in Population Dynamics, Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health, Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health.
He won the Distinguished Mentorship Award in 2010 for outstanding guidance and support to the SPH-CDC HIV/AIDS Fellows 2008/2010 at Makerere University School of Public Health SPH-CDC HIV/AIDS Fellowship Program. His research focus are the design, implementation and analysis of Clinical Trials (DIACTs), the demographic impacts of HIV/AIDS including infant& child mortality, orphanhood and adolescent sexual behaviours, and in Reproductive and Sexual Health especially among the HIV-infected population. He has extensive community based research experience in Clinical/Community trials and longitudinal studies, accrued over an eighteen year research experience with the Rakai Health Sciences program (RHSP).
He has coordinated and managed large databases as well as handling critical statistical analyses on various research studies with the RHSP including as a Ugandan trial statistician on the Male circumcision study and on the Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Acyclovir Prophylaxis versus Placebo among HIV-1/HSV-2 Co-Infected Individuals in Uganda. He is the director of the Family Health Research and development Center (FHRDC) under the School of Public Health.
He has published papers on reproductive health, and orphanhood and HIV prevention studies. Fredrick is a member of the Science and Ethics Committee (IRC) at the Uganda Virus Research Institute; the National AIDS Research Committee (NARC) and the (Higher Degrees, Research and Ethics Committee (HDREC) at the Makerere University School of Public Health.
