Synopsis
Makerere University School of Public Health -MakSPH at the College of Health Sciences is seeking financial support to enable her execute a $10Million infrastructure expansion project at the Makerere University Main Campus.
This follows a continuous successful resource mobilization drive and receipt of a pool of funds from the MakSPH staff, alumni, donors, partners, friends and well-wishers.
We intend to construct an 8-storey building that will house tutorials, demonstration laboratories, auditoriums as well as space for research fellows, doctoral students and post-doctoral trainees.
The facility will facilitate adequate training and skills development for public health professionals capable of addressing the ever-increasing magnitude and complexity of public health problems. We are faced with public health challenges including environmental degradation, epidemics, internal displacements of people and refugee crisis due to natural disasters and armed conflicts, and poor and constrained health systems.
Background
MakSPH is a leading public health research and training institution in Uganda and within Africa. Founded in 1954 as a Department of Preventive Medicine, it became an Institute of Public Health in 1974 and upgraded to a School of Public Health in 2007 under the Makerere University College of Health Sciences.
It has expanded from one to 11 academic programs over the past 20 years. The number of trainees has grown from 50 to 1,000. Further, the number of research and service programs has similarly expanded.
MakSPH currently supports several training, research and service projects across Africa, and as well placed to serve as a hub for public health programs within the region. However, there has not been a corresponding rise in training and research space. The current research and service programs at the MakSPH include, HIV, Cancer, Maternal and Newborn Health, Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, Health Systems and Policy, Disaster Management, Tobacco and Substance Abuse Control, and One Health. These and future programs in fields such as Health Informatics, Monitoring and Evaluation, mHealth, and Innovations, require appropriately designed and sufficient space and Infrastructure.
Goal
The goal is to raise USD10M for expansion of MakSPH training and research facilities. These facilities, together with the pre-existing ones, will enable MakSPH to provide world class and modern training of public health professionals who will be capable of addressing current and emerging health problems.
