Lynn Atuyambe, Ph.D., (Public Health Sciences International Health) teaches at the Makerere University School of Public Health-Department of Community Health and Behavioural Sciences. He obtained his doctorate from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden and Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. His thesis was largely qualitative and all the 4 papers are published in peer reviewed Journals. The thesis is on adolescent reproductive health. He has had opportunity to teach both undergraduate medical students and postgraduates. He has also supervised Master of Public Health students and mentored several HIV/AIDS fellows in the MakSPH/CDC fellowship program. In fact, He won the Distinguished Mentorship Award in 2012 for outstanding guidance and support to the MakSPH-CDC HIV/AIDS Fellows 2010/2012 at Makerere University School of Public Health MakSPH-CDC HIV/AIDS Fellowship Program.
Dr. Atuyambe is the managing facilitator for an international course entitled Public Health in Complex Emergencies run annually by the School of Public Health together with International Rescue Committee, World Education Inc. USA. He serves on several University committees. For example He is a committee member of the Higher Degrees, Research and Ethics Committee of MakSPH. He also serves as committee member of Research and Graduate Studies Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS). This is a committee of the MakCHS Academic Board. Since 2009 he was appointed as Committee member of the Research & Innovations Sub- Committee of the Makerere University Research, Administrative and Financial Reforms (URAFR) Committee. Dr Atuyambe is co-investigator to large grants e.g. the MEPI MakCHS NIH Education Grant which brings together all the 5 medical Universities together.
He is also is the Principal Investigator for an NIH funded project “The Eastern Africa Global Environmental and Occupational Health Hub (GEOHealth-Hub) Makerere University”. This project partners with University of South California and three eastern Africa countries (Addis Ababa University, University of Nairobi and University of Rwanda) https://geohealth-hub.org/ dealing with air quality monitoring and lung health research in Kampala city.
Besides, Dr. Atuyambe has participated in both qualitative and quantitative research projects in various capacities in the endeavor to do research and extend service to the community. He is a trainer in Qualitative research methods, data collection techniques and analysis. His recent publications take a qualitative approach. He is very experienced in surveys in Uganda and the region. He has collaborated on research in Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia and Cameroune.
He has also served on evaluation teams for reproductive health programs as principle and co-investigator. Amongst baseline surveys conducted, topics have ranged from HIV/AIDS needs assessments for the community as well as persons living with AIDS (PLWAs) to HIV/AIDS evaluation programs. He has extensively worked in the domain of STI, Sexual maturation and health, Adolescent sexual and reproductive health. In HIV/AIDS specific topics have been on Adolescent reproductive health, child sexual abuse, STIs in the army in relation to migration and troop movements, Access to and patient selection for enhanced ART, AIDS District Assessment. Dr Atuyambe’s recent publications have focused on adolescent reproductive health, Coping theories among pregnant adolescents, HIV/AIDS, ART access and fairness, Stigma and discrimination and HIV disclosure outcomes.
