Dr. Suzanne Kiwanuka

Dr. Suzanne Kiwanuka is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Health Policy Planning and Management Department at Makerere University School of Public Health (Kampala, Uganda) with a passion and vast experience in health systems strengthening and evidence based policy making through strengthening of implementation research.

Dr. Suzanne holds a doctorate in Oral epidemiology and international health from the University of Bergen, Norway, a masters degree in public health and is a doctor of dental surgery. Dr. Suzanne has led several projects as a PI and Co-PI. She is a co-team leader on a project aimed at saving lives of mothers and newborns through community empowerment and health systems strengthening in three districts in Uganda.

Dr. Kiwanuka has vast experience in consultancy work funded by several multi-lateral partners that has been acquired over the past 10 years. Dr. Kiwanuka is strongly grounded in knowledge management and the use of evidence to inform policy following a long term collaboration with the Cochrane Centre (Effective Practices and Organization of Care Group, Oslo, Norway) and the Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Coordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre, at the Institute of Education, London) to synthesize policy relevant evidence for strengthening human resources for health particularly in Low and Middle Income Countries to identify effectively address health worker challenges in Low and Middle Income Countries.

She has worked with the Cochrane Effective Practices and Organization of Care Group to produce and peer review SUPPORT summaries in collaboration with Evidence Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet). Her significant contributions to science include the building of a community of practice and of the capacity for knowledge translation across ten African countries under the knowledge Translation Network For Africa (KTNET Africa) She is also also a highly experienced and widely published maternal and newborn health researcher with extensive experience working with district leaders and communities.
