Steven N. Kabwama

Steven Kabwama is an epidemiologist and Research Associate at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), in the Department of Community Health and Behavioural Sciences. A graduate of the prestigious Advanced Field Epidemiology Fellowship, a collaborative programme between Makerere University, Uganda’s Ministry of Health, and the U.S. CDC, recognized for his outstanding performance, Steven holds a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Southern Denmark, supported by a Danish State Scholarship, and a Bachelor’s in Food Science and Technology from Makerere University.

Steven’s research expertise spans noncommunicable disease epidemiology and pandemic preparedness. He has led national data analyses on noncommunicable disease risk factors and contributed to COVID-19 response projects across Africa. Currently, he directs a mortality surveillance project in Uganda’s island districts and co-leads research on lessons from past public health crises that informed Uganda’s 2022 Ebola response. Pursuing a PhD at Karolinska Institutet, his work focuses on embedding business continuity planning into emergency response strategies to ensure sustained healthcare access during public health crises in low- and middle-income countries.
