Background
Environmental health is a discipline concerned with the relationship between humans and all factors in the environment and how they interact to impact health. The profession is concerned with how the built and natural environment, and human population affect health(WHO 2022). Healthier environments could prevent almost one-quarter of the global burden of the disease (WHO 2022).
Makerere University Environmental Health Students’ Association (MUEHSA) was established in 2003 by Environmental Health students at Makerere University School of Public Health with the aim of promoting the interests of Environmental Health students, EH practitioners such as HI, EHO, ADHO, and other EH professionals in Uganda and internationally.
MUEHSA carries out several activities including; supporting continuing professional development through annual conferences, and public exhibitions; carrying out environmental health advocacy at local and international levels including; involvement in national wide health activities such as outbreak investigation and prevention; and supporting local communities through outreach programs. MUEHSA has been at the frontline of promoting and advocating for environmental health in Uganda in recent years which has greatly influenced training, policy, and practice in the country (MUEHSA 2022).
It is upon this background that MUEHSA in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, and the Environmental Health Workers Association are organizing the 18th MUEHSA Scientific conference to be held on the 27th and 28th of April 2023 at Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility (CTF) auditorium Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
The two days conference will bring together professionals from different disciplines, academics, researchers, funders, policymakers, implementers, students, media, and other stakeholders from around the world. The event will be interdisciplinary and inclusive to both those working in environmental health and other professionals. The diverse range of professionals working or having interests in environmental health will provide insight into the contribution of environmental and health solutions in the combating of emerging and re-emerging diseases both in Uganda and Globally. Over 400 participants from different regions are expected to participate in this event. Several entities including; universities, professional associations, research institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, and local governments around the world that have done tremendous environmental health work will showcase their achievements, outputs, and experiences at the conference. The conference program will include plenary addresses from keynote speakers, panel discussions, oral and poster presentations, exhibitions, and other networking opportunities. Distinguished keynote speakers from the Ministry of Health, Environmental Health Workers Association of Uganda, and Infectious Disease Institute.
Conference theme and subthemes
Theme: Environmental health and its contribution to combatting emerging and re-emerging diseases.
Emerging diseases are illnesses that have newly appeared in a population or have existed but are rapidly increasing in incidence such as HIV/AIDs infections, SARS, Lyme disease, West Nile Virus/Ebola, hantavirus, dengue fever, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and the Zika virus while re-emerging diseases illnesses that reappear after they have significantly declined attributed to a breakdown in public health measures for the disease, emergence of new strains of the diseases causing organisms and effect of human behavior. Reemerging diseases include; malaria, tuberculosis, cholera, pertussis, influenza, pneumococcal disease, and gonorrhea(Green 2020).
Environmental health has had several contributions in the combating of emerging and re-emerging diseases for instance training, surveillance, research, governance, formulation of policies, and regulatory frameworks in the prevention and mitigation of disease occurrences (Ndejjo, Atusingwize et al. 2019). Environmental health is thus a key cadre in combatting emerging and re-emerging diseases to promote health and livelihood (Cairncross and Feachem 2018).

The conference will be publicized on different websites, Twitter, and newspapers, using posters and banners that will be pinned in areas commonly accessed by the targeted audience.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Abstract preparation
- Authors should indicate the sub-theme under which their abstract falls in the composed email.
- Provide contact information for the presenting author including both email address and telephone number.
- Abstracts must have a title which should have no have more than 25 words. The title should be in bold and each word capitalized.
- Author(s)/co-author(s) name(s) and institutional affiliations should be included under the title. Degrees or professional titles should not be included. The name of the presenting author should be italicized.
- Research abstracts should be formatted into the following subsections: Background, Methods, Results and Conclusion. These subheadings should NOT be in “ALL-CAPS”.
- Appropriate subsections should be used for abstracts other than that stated above with the same case properties maintained.
- The body of the abstract should not exceed 300 words.
- Abstracts should not include tables, figures, references or acknowledgements.
- Abstracts should be prepared in Times New Romans, 12-point font size and single spaced.
Abstract submission
Submit the abstract file as an email attachment to muehsa@musph.ac.ug with subject: “ABSTRACT SUBMISSION: 18TH MUEHSA ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE”.
Abstract review
Only the abstracts that follow submission guidelines as stated above shall be reviewed by the abstract Review committee. Otherwise they will be rejected and canceled out. Clearance Notices shall only be emailed to applicants whose abstracts have been confirmed to be outstanding. Presentation formats (oral or poster) of accepted abstracts will be called for at a later time upon abstract confirmation by the Abstract Review Board.
