About the Candidate

Esther Bayiga is a PhD candidate at the School of Public Health, Makerere University (MakSPH), where her research, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education, focuses on pedestrian safety and the built environment in Kampala, Uganda. In addition to her doctoral work, she is a Research Fellow in the Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, specializing in road safety with nearly 10 years of experience.

Esther holds a Master’s degree in Health Services Research from MakSPH, with a focus on road safety. She was a 2015-2016 NIH Fogarty Fellow through the Johns Hopkins-Makerere University collaboration on trauma, injury, and disability research. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Sciences and a Master of Public Health.

Previously, Esther served as secretary of the PhD Forum at MakSPH and is a member of the WHO's Global Technical Advisory Group on Motorcycle Safety. This group brings together experts from countries with high motorcycle use, including Uganda, Viet Nam, Kenya, Colombia, and Malaysia.

Her research interests span both intentional and unintentional injury prevention, with a focus on road and traffic safety. Key areas include injury epidemiology, the built environment’s role in road safety, post-crash emergency care, health intervention costing, and evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions.
