Description
In 2015, the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) in partnership with selected universities in Europe and in sub-Saharan Africa won a Grant from Wellcome Trust and UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) to advance biostatistics training in Africa. Makerere University is a sub-recipient of the grant. The grant is part of DFID’s “Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science (DELTAS)” initiative. The initiative aims to improve health in Africa through research driven by the most urgent regional challenges.
The grant supports development of advanced degree programs in Biostatistics. The staff in the Universities under the umbrella Sub-Saharan Africa Consortium for Advanced Biostatistics training (SSACAB) can be facilitated to offer technical support where needed. Our School of Public Health has benefited with a fund to support the M.biostat curriculum development which will be offered in 2018/19 academic year. The overall PI of the DELTAS-SSACAB is Prof Tobias Chirwa of WITS while the Makerere team leader is Assoc Prof Nazarius M Tumwesigye
